Scorpions is another band I listen a lot to in the seventies. We even used to cover “Dark Lady” with my first band. I had planned to do “Catch Your Train” on the first Mountain of Power, but couldn’t get it right. In 2007 I had the great pleasure of being part of an “all star” band gig featuring Electric Sun members Uli Roth and Ule Ritgen, plus Liz Vandall, Thomas Broman, Marc Boals, Mats Levén and Ken Hensley. We rehearsed for 6 hours the day before, did a lot of vintage Scorpions, some of Uli’s stuff and a Purple cover. It was quite an experience jamming with one of my heroes and, despite Gotthard running late and making us cut our set short (by half), the show was great. I really wanted to do a tribute to Uli, and finally came to think of his Electric Sun recordings, and the track “Indian Dawn” which reminds me of the classic vintage Scorpions stuff. I gave it a go, and I feel it worked fine. To show the Scorpions reference I dropped in a sequence from “Polar Nights” after the first verse and a bit of “Hellcat” before the solos. As Uli wasn’t happy with the combination of the songs lyrically, I decided to do the “Hellcat” part instrumental. The solos on this one starts with myself, goes on to the inimitable Thomas Larsson and ends with a blues laden Sven Cirnski.
